Giving birth in Belgium? Get the birth support you deserve!
Centered Care for Growing Families
THRIVE, NOT JUST SURVIVE
First of all — congratulations on your pregnancy. Whether this is your first baby or your next, this is an exciting chapter.
Pregnancy and birth naturally come with questions, hopes, and uncertainties. When you’re preparing to give birth in a foreign country, those feelings can be even stronger. Different medical systems, unfamiliar routines, possible language barriers, and being far from family or your usual support network can leave you feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or simply longing for something familiar.
I know this feeling firsthand. I am a foreigner myself, and I gave birth twice in Belgium. I understand what it’s like to navigate pregnancy and prepare for birth away from home in a system that may feel unfamiliar.
You deserve to feel safe, informed, and supported, wherever you give birth.
That’s where I come in as your doula.
More and more parents are choosing to include a doula as part of their birth team — and for good reason. Research shows that continuous doula support is associated with shorter labors, fewer medical interventions, a lower likelihood of assisted births or cesarean sections, and higher overall birth satisfaction* for parents. Babies, too, tend to experience fewer complications.
So, what exactly is a doula?
A doula is a trained, non-medical professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and shortly after birth. A doula does not replace your medical team or make decisions for you. Instead, she works alongside your care providers, focusing entirely on your experience — helping you understand your options, feel supported, and stay grounded throughout labor and birth.
While the role of a doula may sound modern, it is rooted in an age-old tradition of continuous support in childbirth. Today’s doulas combine this timeless wisdom with professional training and evidence-based practices. Doulas also support partners, offering guidance and reassurance so they feel confident, involved, and able to support you in a meaningful way.
As your doula, I am there to support both of you — continuously, calmly, and compassionately.
EVERY BIRTHING MOTHER DESERVES A DOULA
Ok, but what is a doula?

BRM® Pro and Body Ready Birth Teacher
Becoming a mother at 40 was a life-changing experience for me—giving birth and breastfeeding transformed not only my perspective but also my path, steering me away from the corporate world and into the realm of birth work.
I believe that every parent deserves to celebrate the moment of bringing new life into the world. Yet, hospital routines and unfamiliar settings can sometimes make birth feel overwhelming or impersonal — especially when you are far from home.
As your doula, I’m here to walk alongside you on your unique birth journey. I offer advocacy, emotional and physical support to help you feel confident, empowered, and truly present. In my support I draw on the Spinning Babies® and Body Ready Method® expertise to support the natural physiology of birth through movement, positioning, body balance, and hands-on comfort measures.
Studies show that parents who hire doulas experience higher birth satisfaction and improved outcomes for both parents and babies.
I — and my clients — completely agree.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING
-Suzanne, Salvador
“Kata’s support was truly indispensable — both during my pregnancy and on the day of the birth. My doctor believed I would have difficulties having a natural birth because she thought my pelvis was too narrow. But thanks to Kata’s guidance, I was able to have a very active labor, which helped my baby engage properly. Her knowledge and experience were essential.”
-Carie, USA
“I had such a beautiful, unforgettable, unmedicated hospital birth with Kata by my side every step of the way. There was no way I could have known just how intense it would be. It is unlike anything I have ever felt. I could not imagine doing that without Kata as my doula and friend! Thank you Kata from the bottom of my heart 🩷”
-Zsófi, Hungary
“Kata is an amazing, supportive and warm person, who gave me the confidence and support to have my vaginal birth after a cesarean. I had a very long labour, she had trust in me even when my doctor did not and he suggested a repeat cesarean. Kata was incredibly helpful with positioning, which finally allowed me to have a vaginal birth. Highly recommend her to anyone needing a great doula.”

Doula FAQ
-
The word "doula" comes from Greek and means "a woman who serves." Doulas provide continuous, non-medical support during the birthing journey, effectively contributing to a positive birth experience.
-
Yes, doula service is fully covered by TRICARE and since I am an approved provider, I invoice TRICARE directly, without you making direct payments towards me.
-
Unlike hospital staff, I will be with you continuously throughout the entire birthing process, providing emotional support, applying comfort measures, and ensuring your comfort to help you feel at ease.
-
No, not at all! I believe a doula is even more beneficial during a hospital birth. Typically, during a homebirth, midwives can provide tailor-made one-on-one care, which is rarely possible in a hospital setting. However, a doula can also provide additional support during a home birth, including during early labor if that is the parents' wish.
-
No. Birth, in our culture, is an unknown territory—regardless of whether it is a natural birth, a birth with interventions, or even a surgical birth. As a doula, I can provide you with reassurance and comfort in this unknown territory.
-
Research has shown that the support provided by a trained doula increases the chances of a spontaneous vaginal birth and reduces the risks of interventions, assisted delivery, and C-sections. It is also proven by research that women who give birth with a doula are less likely to require pain medication and are more likely to have a positive birth experience. The cherry on the cake: even breastfeeding is longer and more successful if a doula is present during birth!
-
A midwife holds medical responsibility during your birth. However, midwives are not continuously present during labor; they may have simultaneous commitments to other births and work in shifts. On the other hand, a doula remains by your side from the beginning to the end, providing consistent support and full attention, regardless of the length of labor.
-
A doula complements the role of your partner, making him/her feel more at ease as well. In my experience, fathers-to-be and partners are more active and involved in the birth process, as they do not have the weight of being the sole support on their shoulders!
-
No. The decisions are always yours to make! However, I can help you make informed decisions by presenting a full picture, explaining the risks, benefits, and possible alternatives.
-
A midwife is a medically trained professional caregiver with a medical focus during your care. A midwife checks your blood pressure, dilation, and monitors your baby’s well-being. However, midwives sometimes manage several births in parallel and work in shifts, making it impossible to provide continuous one-on-one support. A doula provides exactly that, with her sole focus being your well-being and comfort!
-
Yes, some insurers in Belgium do reimburse some of the doula costs based on the invoice. It's best to check with your insurer, and if you have extra hospitalization insurance, please check with them as well.
-
A birth doula provides support during pregnancy, labor, and birth. A postpartum doula focuses on the weeks and months after the baby is born. They assist with recovery, newborn care, breastfeeding, and household chores. Their role is to ease the transition into parenthood.
-
A rebozo massage is a traditional Mexican technique using a long woven scarf called a "rebozo." This gentle, rhythmic massage is often used during pregnancy to relax muscles, relieve tension, and help with optimal baby positioning. The rebozo can be used in various ways to provide comfort during labor.
-
A closing ritual is a traditional postpartum ceremony practiced in various cultures to support physical and emotional recovery after childbirth. One well-known version is the Mexican "closing the bones" ritual, which involves wrapping the mother's body with a rebozo to provide a sense of closure, grounding, and comfort.
The ritual typically includes massage, warmth, and gentle movements to help the body realign, release tension, and honor the transformative journey of birth.

”When women are supported during labor, they are more likely to trust their bodies and the birthing process.”
